About Us

As we have come to accept the value of inclusivity in society, the celebration of our cultural differences and the embrace of diverse representation in all aspects of life, there is still a lot of work to be done in the 21st century. As latina mothers, we strive for our daughters’ and sons to have a better understanding and an in-depth look of the contributions made by Latina women in the United States. We have come to the realization that our Latinx youth need to see themselves represented more in classroom lessons, history books and school projects where unfortunately the names, faces, milestones and legacy of influential Latina pioneers continue to be left out, forgotten and ignored.

We applaud, appreciate and thank the authors that have released Latinx infant and children's books, however there is still a huge absence of youth Latinx books in the literary world. So what did we do? Create a book that caters specifically to our youth of 8-12 years of age in hopes of contributing to filling this gap and meeting this need. We strongly believe that now more than ever, girls and boys of all ages need to be exposed to the many contributions made by Latinx personalities in all types of fields. Without knowing and seeing high achievers like the phenomenal women highlighted in Grandes Dreamers, career choices are more limited, especially for young ladies. The more we provide our youth with these empowering Latinx book selections, the more they will learn and widen their horizons.

Grandes Dreamers was written in both English and Spanish as a way of honoring and preserving our mother tongue. We strongly believe that this bilingual book will give young people the opportunity to maintain their linguistic richness and strengthen the cultural bond with parents and grandparents, forging a positive and rich image of the Latinx community. The hard work, endless effort and genuine dedication behind Grandes Dreamers fills our hearts with tremendous joy as we proudly mention the names of legendary women who have too paved the way with courage and have become the ultimate embodiment of the American dream.

Argelia Atilano

Argelia Atilano, a proud mother of two young girls discovered that her children from a very young age, loved to learn and be inspired by the magnificent stories of extraordinary women trailblazers throughout history. Discouraged by the absence of Latina notable figures in both her daughters’ class instruction, school projects, textbooks and unable to find in-depth books with this theme for older children, Argelia decided to do something about it. Motivated by her eldest daughter Camila's love for women empowerment, Argelia ventured in writing about Latina role models in the United States and highlighted their powerful stories in a book that specifically caters to the age group of 8-12. Today, it fills her with enormous pride as she introduces to her daughters and entire youth with Grandes Dreamers, a lengthy and detailed bilingual book that presents not one, two or three but a dozen Latina trailblazers who deserve to be mentioned, included and celebrated with pride while learning of their valuable contributions and legacy as part of the American history.

Argelia has a double major degree in Communication Studies and Spanish Language Literature from Loyola Marymount University. You can listen to her every morning as the leading female voice of El Show de Omar y Argelia on K-LOVE 107.5 FM in Los Angeles, California.
